Recyling is important becuase it helps reduce waste in our landfills, but knowing where to send recyacalbes is even more important. Some plastics can’t be recycled locally, and have to be sent to certain states or facitlities, even other countries.

Learning about companies like Terra Cycle, finding local sources that collect plastics #2 and #4 and single use plastic bgas, or calling your local recycale company can help you learn where and what is recyable. And then you can share what you learn, by tagging us!, or emailing Helping Ninjas so we can share with others!

Recycling is a word to learn, and practicing it is an act to learn.

Share with us how you are reusing, recyling and reusing – or reducing at home! We want to hear! Email: [email protected] or post and tag #HelpingNInjas on Social Media.

HELPING NIJNAS IS HELPING BOOKS FOR YOUTH!

Books For Youth is an organization that makes backpacks for youth who are in Indiana Foster Care. Indiana State Department, Indianapolis Colts and CSI Cargo Services are working together to pack each bag with 25 books. So far, Books for Youth has collected enough books to give out approximately  8,000 backpacks to foster chidren Indiana.

To learn about Books For Youth and it’s sponsor, CSI Cargo Services:

Colts Community – Books For Youth

Why is the books for youth organization important? There are approximately 29,000 youth in the foster care program. Since 2016 only 1,500  have been adopted. The youth that are placed in Indiana Foster Care do not always have the opportuntity to read books outside of school. So, in order to solve this problem Books For Youth is giving to school backpacks with 25 books so that these children can have the benefits that reading can bring to kids.

We need to support this cause; imagine having being in foster care, and not being able to have  books? I believe that what foster care kids are going through, or have been through, not having a book to read, should not be one amongst the list of hardships. And, this can be addressed, simply simply donating a book.

Helping Ninjas is helping the Books For Youth program by providing collection bins, pick up and delivery for others to join the efforts, by donating new or gently used books.

We currently have bins located in the folloiwng locations:

  • Off The Wall Sports, Carmel IN
  • Excel Chiropractor, Marcus McCray (86th and Ditch)
  • College Wood Elementary Media Center, Carmel, IN
  • Ninja Zone – Grand Park Academy,  Westfield, IN
  • Ninja Zone – Geist Academy, Gesit IN
  • Ninja Zone – Wrights Gymnastics & Fundamentals, Carmel IN
  • CreekSide Middle School, Carmel, IN

How can you help? Create awareness or donate a book. Ask someone if you can have a book drive of your own. We, Helping Ninjas, are workiing with Books For Youth and helping them to help the communities to help provide collection bins and carry out pick-up/delivery of donated books.

I truly believe together we can help these kids. Everyone deserves the opportunity to read.

Accoriding to an article by Demin Vaughn, in the IndyStar published in July 2018, “The program is important on two fonts. First and foremost, statistics show that children who read, succeed. Reading at an early age not only increases success in the classroom, but also in life. Secondarily, the program raises awareness of the foster care system in Indiana — a state that’s in desperate need for foster families.”
The creator and founder of Books For Youth, Steve Pemberton said in an interview on the Books For Youth Website “Reading gave me self-esteem, confidence and let me know that, despite the instability and uncertainty that was happening all around me, I did have a purpose and a place in this world after all.”

Alternatives to plastic straws

We all know that plastic straws are not good for our land and aquatic ecosystems.

The war on plastic straws is growing and big food and beverage companies are being forced to give up plastic straws. Plastic is biodegradable too but takes a very very long time to do so as compared to other products made of natural raw materials. This leaves us with a question…. What should we use INSTEAD of plastic straws?

Luckily, we have the alternatives for plastic straws-Straw, Glass, Bamboo, Paper, Metal. The following table shows an analysis of the cost and their waste processability.

Straw Material Reusable Biodegradable Compostable Approx. Cost ($ per straw)*
PLA (Polylactic acid) Yes Yes $0.06
Hay Yes Yes  $0.08
Paper Yes $0.20
Glass Yes $1.20
Bamboo Yes Yes Yes $1.60
Metal Yes $2.30

*The pricing above is a very rough estimate solely used for the purpose of comparing the cost of straws.

It can be seen from the above table that PLA straws are the cheapest out of all of them and metal straws are the costliest. Bamboo and glass straws are medium priced.

PLA straws are made of polylactic acid (maily derived by fermenting corn starch. These straws are compostable but they need composting facilities with specific conditions (temperature and other settings) to facilitate the composting. They cannot be composted using natural composting techniques.

Stand Up To Straws, A Note From a Ninja

“We want to tell other kids about the harm plastic straws are doing to marine life like sea turtles and how it is killing them. We think this is very sad and that others need to know about it. We hope to bring awareness about these innocent creatures. We think that the more people know about this, then the more people will not want to use plastic straws. If someone knows using a plastic straw could hurt an animal, maybe they would not want to use one anymore.” Leo, Age 9, #StandUpToStraws

We want to help the environment because the plastic straws that we are using every minute and every hour are putting a big impact on the environment itself, we want to use eco-friendly straws – the outcome we seek is to use these stores world-wide and heal from the harm we have caused.” Vedh, Age 9, #StandUpToStraws

“We know plastic straws pollute, but we know some people like to use straws and even need straws. We can use different types of straws instead that are biodegradable like plant based plastic straws that decompose, or bamboo straws. Bamboo straws are commonly used in some Eastern Countries, like India, where I am from.  Also, it is good because these straws will not pollute our oceans and these straws cannot harm sea animals. If we can convince others to stop using harmful plastic straws, soon there will be none in our oceans.” Amogh, Age 10, #StandUpToStraws

“We live in a beautiful world, which is also our home. Sadly, we are the ones destroying it. One way we can save it is by creating awareness of the harm plastic straws are causing. Plastic Straws are the top 10 most commonly found plastic in the ocean and at beaches. We want to create awareness about the dangers of plastic straws and help people find solutions. One way we will do this is by telling people why not to use plastic straws, and suggesting to use Bamboo straws, or any compostable straws. For these can help the environment because they are 100% Biodegradable. We will work hard to save the beautiful world we all know and love.”  Siddarth, age 11, #StandUpToStraws

Happy Harvest!

Helping Ninjas delivered baskets of fresh, organic produce to the their schools eduacation building in Carmel.

Helping Ninjas wanted to share their harvest from a Carmel Micro Teen Grant Award for their Green Community, Garden and School outreach project, and to share what they have learned and how they have helped their community!

Students who helped with this deleivery were  elementary and middle aged students from Creekside Midddle and  College Wood Elementary, and a sbiling, a little helping ninja who is in pre-school- all of which helped to plant the seeds and to help care for the seedlings from start to finish!

Helping Ninjas left baskets of fresh, organic vegetables and herbs for the staff  that they had just picked freshly that  morning.

These students were fortunate and honored to meet Dr. Beresford, their new  SuperIndendant of Carmel Clay Schools.

Dr. Beresford  said he had never met ninjas before! The students were also privileged to have met Mrs. Anne Marie Woerner, Assistant Food Services Coordinator.  She invited the students back to the faculty break room where the students left the freshly picked organic produce in the cafe for Carmel Clay Education faculty and staff to enjoy!

Helping Ninjas learned how to  help our community and the environment by learning how to grow vegetables and herbs from seed!

Students successfully were able to grow the following organic produce in both their home, Helping Ninjas Garden and at  the College Wood Cafeteria Plots lcoatd at the CCS Plots to Plates Community Organic Gardens. All efforts of this vegetation program were for the Green Community, Garden and School Outreach Project in whcih the students worked alongside Mrs. Susan Eva- McCord, CWE Cafe and Cafe Garden Manager at College Wood Elementary.

  • Basil
  • Cilantro
  • Jalepeno Peppers
  • Green Peppers
